UK sportive preview: West Riding Classic

BikesEtc 29 Mar 2018 An old-school sportive in the magnificent Yorkshire Dales When: 28th April 2018 Where: Clapham, North Yorkshire Distances: 120km/95km/50km Cost: £26 Website: theopenwheel.com What is the West Riding Classic? A beautiful ride following quiet roads through some classic Yorkshire Dales scenery, such as Kingsdale, Dent, Ribblehead, Malham and Settle, with something for everyone from newbies to seasoned sportive riders. The West Riding Classic is very much an old-school sportive – don’t expect electronic chip timing, instead the focus is on the old-fashioned hospitality with riders issued cards to clock in and out at control points on the route. In place of high-energy gels at feed stations, you can expect to find ‘delicious home-cooked food and old-fashioned comradery’. Prices are old school too, with a flat-rate entry fee of £26 for all routes making it excellent value. See related How to get the most from Zwift Turbo time: ...

Goodbye gym, hello Zwift

Goodbye gym, hello Zwift

This is a sponsored article in association with Zwift. Spring has finally sprung and attentions have naturally turned to gearing up for a fitter, more active summer. Gyms beckon, and their monthly memberships prove tempting to many of us, as they tap into our fears that we’ve stacked up a few too many fatty deposits over winter. Don’t fall into the trap. A UK poll showed that the average ‘gym-goer’ wastes £1,000 a year by being tied into 12-month contracts but, at most, attends for just three months. It’s hardly surprising; most gyms play demotivating cheesy dance music, you’re forced to wait for weight machines, and you waste time heading to the gym and back. Enter Zwift… Zwift: your complete guide Zwift: Train to conquer Watopia Affordable improvements Zwift is the multiplayer cycling gaming sensation that’s transformed indoor cycling from a disheartening winter exercise to an all-year-round motivational essential. 1. ...

Zwift: Train to conquer Watopia

Zwift: Train to conquer Watopia

This is a sponsored article in association with Zwift. Zwift features three different and challenging worlds: the London course that hosts Prudential RideLondon in July, the Richmond route that saw Peter Sagan win the 2015 Road World Championships, and the mythical island of Watopia. And it’s Watopia where we’re heading now, identifying key features and the fitness variables you need to conquer them. Become polka-dot royalty As the name suggests, the Epic KOM/QOM is a devilish ascent and at 9.5km it remains the longest verified climb segment on Zwift. Total elevation gain nestles at 414m, with an average gradient of 3.9 percent, maximum tilt of 10.7 percent and the summit bursting through the Watopia skies at 372m. The climb hints of Alpine peaks with the base of the climb tropical before snow flanks either side of the road around 250m up. The fastest ascender becomes the wearer of the Epic ...

The Canyon Grail: Reinventing the handlebar

Joe Robinson 15 Mar 2018 Canyon's latest gravel bike, the Grail, has attempted to rethink how we see the humble handlebar Following the trend of more people going off-road, German direct-to-market brand Canyon has launched its latest range of gravel bikes, the Canyon Grail. Designed as an all-road bike, the Canyon Grail looks to help riders combine dirt and tarmac in one ride while also debuting Canyon's innovative new approach to the handlebar, the Hover Bar. This bike comes with the clear purpose of attracting itself to the ever-growing market or riders looking for adventure on and off-road, spending long days in the saddle simply enjoying the bike. It does this while also trying to change our thoughts about the humble handlebars. Talking point Image 3 of 23 Image 3 of 23 Canyon, in a way, has attempted to reinvent the handlebar to help meet 'rider demands of a bar ...

11spd: This week's best new bike gear

Here in the UK the snow may now have thawed and bread and milk is once again on our shelves, but there are still stock issues at our local KFC. In more relevant news, we were delighted to learn that B’Twin is continuing to create very good B’Twin bikes at very reasonable prices , although it also became apparent that we won’t be calling them B’Twin for much longer . We also got a leg over Canyon’s feisty new electrified Spectral and learned just what it takes to win a Zwift national championship . But that’s not why you’re here. Here’s the shiny stuff… Pirelli PZero Velo 4S tyre Pirelli made an impressive return to cycling tyres last year with its three model PZero Velo range. We quickly fell for the regular PZero Velo tyre , which went on to score a full 4.5/5 stars thanks to its supple casing and ...

Tanja Erath: 'No second thoughts' about joining Canyon-SRAM after winning Zwift Academy

Jack Elton-Walters 8 Mar 2018 Former triathlete surprised herself by winning the Zwift Academy, but there was never any doubt that she'd take her place on Canyon-SRAM Back in December, Tanja Erath became the second winner of the Zwift Academy, earning a one-year professional contract with Canyon-SRAM . She followed in the footsteps of inaugural winner Leah Thorvilson , who will now be her roommate after a move to the team's base in Girona. 'It’s nice to have somebody leading you into the cycling scene and into the pro team. I will appreciate that in the coming season,' Erath says of Thorvilson. Erath and her fellow Zwift Academy hopefuls were able to benefit from Thorvilson's advice long before her place in the team was assured. What it takes to win a Zwift national championship

Racing on the Zwift virtual platform continues to grow, with national championships in 14 countries being held for the first time on February 24th. BikeRadar caught up with Adam Zimmerman on what it took for him to best the US men's field of 300+ riders. Best smart trainers of 2018 The national championship was held on a three-lap course that featured a 6min climb. Zimmerman raced the Zwift event like an outdoor race - with a team, a strategy, in-race communication and a lead-out - but while on a Wahoo Kickr . "This race was very fast from the start with over 300 riders," Zimmerman said. "Each time up the six-minute climb it was very difficult. Then it was steady hard until hitting the climb once again. Overall this race wasn't very high in average watts per kilo. It was much more tactical." In order to be given an official ...
