Photo Gallery: 2018 Nahbs Custom Mountain, Adventure Bikes

DeSalvo John Tomac

Traditional double-diamond bicycle frames naturally lend themselves to custom construction, which is perhaps why the hand-built industry has typically focused on hardtails when it comes to mountain bikes. Complex suspension designs require increasingly complicated (and expensive) R&D; work, not to mention highly specialized parts, and that sort of thing just isn’t in the cards for … The post Photo gallery: 2018 NAHBS custom mountain, adventure bikes appeared first on CyclingTips .

We’ve covered some of the best gravel bikes as well as traditional road bikes on display at this year’s North American Handmade Bicycle show. Last but not least, let’s take look at four interesting mountain bikes. Three stunning road bikes from NAHBS 2018 8 great gravel bikes from NAHBS 2018 Gallery: the weird and wonderful bikes of NAHBS 2018 Sklar Adam Sklar starting building frames as a teenager, and although he’s only 24 years old, he already has a strong following. Based in Bozeman, Montana, Sklar builds mountain, cyclocross, gravel and all-road bikes with his signature arcing top tube. He primarily crafts his bikes from steel, but has recently added titanium to his repertoire. This particular bike was made for a Kitsbow employee. The TIG-welded steel frame features long and slack geometry, a 150m-travel fork and meaty 29x2.6in tires. Olivetti Boo Bicycles Groovy Cycleworks You can read more at BikeRadar.com

Saracen Kili Flyer Elite Review

Saracen Kili Flyer Elite review

Saracen’s Kili Flyer Elite is light and well-shaped for fast and far riding all year round, but its sticky suspension and frame flex are obvious in technical sections. The full-carbon frame’s layout hasn’t changed for 2018 but Saracen has modified the mould to let it stretch the front end. That means the medium is as long as last year’s large. Best mountain bike wheels Mountain bike groupsets: everything you need to know The back end is now Boost width, with a bolted axle and direct-mount mech for stiffer shifting and tracking, and the head angle is a degree slacker. Saracen has also specced a lighter compression tune on the shock. The 30mm main pivot, ISCG-05 tabs and optional front mech mount stay the same. There’s a lot of stiction in the linkage bushings, which makes swingarm movement notchy even with the shock removed. Saracen Kili Flyer Elite kit While its ...

The Giant Trance 1 Is Far More Bike Than I Deserve: Early Review

The Giant Trance 1 is far more bike than I deserve: early review

The Trance 1 is the top spec aluminium model of Giant’s all-rounder trail bike, and I’ve got one for a long-term test. I'll be updating this article over the coming months with my experiences of the bike, read on for a first look and some early riding impressions. Matthew Allen’s go-to gear and kit: 6 favourites Giant Trance 2 first look How to get your suspension setup dialled in just 10 minutes The 140mm Trance sits between the more XC-oriented Anthem and the rowdier Reign in Giant’s range. You could have a carbon Trance Advanced for slightly less money than the Trance 1, but the alloy bike gets a much tastier spec than the entry-level carbon model. (In the UK and Australia that is, the Trance 1 does not appear to be available in the US and the spec differs in some European countries.) Buy your own Giant Trance 1 ...

Is Sram Eagle About To Go Wireless?

Is SRAM Eagle about to go wireless?

SRAM's Eagle eTap might be on the way. Photos posted on Instagram appear to show an electronic version of SRAM's top-tier 12-speed mountain bike group mounted to cross-country world champ Nino Schurter's Scott Spark. SRAM XX1 Eagle groupset review SRAM adds WiFLi tech to Red eTap groupset Wireless electronic shifting for all mountain bike 1x drivetrains. Yes, even yours The leaked images appear to show a battery-equipped rear derailleur paired to a 12-speed Eagle cassette. Even Schurter's own Instagram account offers a potential clue. While not entirely clear, it appears that his bike is without a rear derailleur cable coming from the right-hand shifter. Studying the image shows what looks to be three hoses coming from the left side, which would consist of the front disc brake, fork lockout, and rear shock lockout. That lines up with his RockShox suspension sponsor and its hydraulically-actuated lockouts. Patent drawings SRAM's new cranks ...

How Big Of A Deal Is ‘Super Boost’?

How big of a deal is ‘Super Boost’?

For the last decade, change has been the only constant in mountain bikes. Evolutions in wheel and tire sizes, bottom-bracket systems, steerer-tube diameters, brake systems and axle configurations have all brought benefits and frustrations in equal measure. The latest standard switch-up looming on the horizon is the so-called 'Super Boost' rear-axle spacing. I contacted seven industry experts to get their take on where Super Boost is headed. Over to you: are you tired of keeping up with the pace of change in cycling tech? A guide to mountain bike axle standards Knolly goes all in with new rear axle width "standard" This Super Boost rear-axle standard isn’t completely new – hubs with 157x12mm axle spacing have existed for years on downhill bikes. The difference is the majority of those hubs used the same flange spacing as 135x10 quick-release and 142x12mm thru-axle hubs. The new generation of Super Boost hubs share ...
