Vitus Energie Carbon Cr Sram Rival Cyclocross Bike Review

Joseph Delves Wednesday, February 28, 2018 - 10:56 Top value cyclocross bike that won’t sell you short whether you race it, rag it, or ride it to work 4.5 / 5 £1600 From niche to mainstream - cyclocross bikes have outgrown the muddy off-season races they were originally designed for. With a couple of tweaks these strange beasts, part road bike, part mountain bike, can tackle a range of pursuits, from touring, to adventure racing, and even regular road work and commuting. Plenty of manufacturers have cottoned on to this, and it’s now rare to find the sort of purist-pleasing ‘cross bike likely to set Belgian hearts fluttering. Consequently the revamped Vitus Energie cyclocross bike range has plenty of nods towards the multi-use market, like broad tyres, tubeless wheels, and a gnarly looking fork. But these modern accoutrements are hung off a carbon frame with pretty race-like geometry. So how ...

The Strade Bianche women's podium

Canyon-SRAM's Katarzyna Niewiadoma aims to bring her new Canyon-SRAM team success at the Women's WorldTour opener Strade Bianche on Saturday. The Polish all-rounder has twice placed second in the Italian one-day classic but aims to take the top step on the podium this time around. In what has become one of the most popular races on the calendar, Strade Bianche will include 136km from Siena to Siena's Piazza del Campo, featuring eight white gravel road sectors through the Tuscan region of Italy. This year, the race is nine kilometres longer with one additional gravel section, compared to last year. "I love this race because of where it takes place. The extraordinarily hard course, the demanding finale," Niewiadoma said. "The women's peloton has few opportunities in the season ...

Strade Bianche 2018: Route, Riders And All You Need To Know

Joe Robinson 27 Feb 2018 Key information about the 2018 Strade Bianche, which takes place on Saturday 3rd March Despite the race only being in its 12th edition, Strade Bianche has quickly become one of the most prestigious one-day races outside of the five Monuments, so much so that it was made a WorldTour race in 2017. With its gravel roads and punchy climbs, the race has suited the Classics men with many who hold ambitions at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix shining brightly at this Italian race. However, more tradtional climbers like Alejandro Valverde and Damiano Cunego have also faired well in the past. The most successful rider at Strade Bianche is Fabian Cancellara with three victories - 2008, 2012 and 2016. The most recent champion is Michal Kwiatkowski whose victory in 2017 kickstarted an impressive Spring Classics campaign that also saw the Pole take his first Monument ...

Rough Stuff Cycling In The Alps

the original guide to adventuring by bike in the Alps, reprinted with stunning vintage photography I am excited about a new cycling book. More precisely, I am excited about a Kickstarter project to finance the republishing of Rough Stuff Cycling in the Alps - a guidebook of 300 unpaved alpine cycling routes. For years, I have been disappointed with people that first visit the Alps with the goal of cycling Alpe d’Huez. Don’t they understand there are so many much more interesting roads? More recently, I have had a similar feeling with Alps visitors when they tell me they only road bike. Don’t they understand there are so many beautiful, unpaved alpine roads/trails? High, beautiful, challenging, deserted, car-free. I hope this book will motivate some of you to consider exploring this unpaved Alps. Personally, I expect to be in route-planning Nirvana. From the Kickstarter program: Rough Stuff Cycling in the ...

Why The 2018 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Was So Underwhelming

Joe Robinson 26 Feb 2018 There were a few clear reasons as to why the first cobbled Classic of the year was not that exciting This weekend, for many, sparked the true start of the cycling season with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday. This cobbled one-day Classic usually produces electric racing and builds the anticipation for the upcoming Tour of Flanders to palpable levels. However while Michael Valgren's (Astana) canny attack led to an impressive solo victory , I couldn't help but to feel a little unsatisfied with this year's race. Bucking the trend of recent years, the 2018 Omloop did not produce the fireworks on the much loved cobbled climbs between the usual culprits that we are used to seeing. Below is a little looks at why we may have all been left underwhelmed by this usually tantalising race. If it isn't broke, don't fix it On paper, Omloop ...

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad: Michael Valgren takes surprise victory

Joe Robinson 24 Feb 2018 Astana make most of numerical advantage with Valgren taking first cobbled classic of the season Michael Valgren made the most of Astana 's numerical advantage in the final kilometres to take a surprise victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad . As one of three Astana riders in the lead group, the young Dane managed to launch himself from a group of 12 close to the finish, gaining a large enough gap to take him to victory. Team Sky 's Lukasz Wisniowski battled to second place with an ever aggressive Sep Vanmarcke (EF-Drapac) holding on for third. Thanks to the company of teammates Alexey Lutsenko and Oscar Gatto, the sheer numbers of Astana were enough to beat the likes of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) and Wout Van Aert (Verandas Willems–Crelan). Cycling Songs, Professionally Reviewed

An art, it can be said, is the craft of pedal-turning. Every rotation of the cranks is itself a symphony. That said, sometimes instruments and vocal chords are added to it. With, er, varied effects. Get Out Of That Saddle, Stephen — Dermot Morgan Ah, the lilting refrains of this ode to Ireland’s only Tour de France winner. Before Dermot Morgan joined the priesthood, he left us with this haunting ditty about Ireland’s darling of 1987. The famed hook of “Get Outta that Saddle, Stephen,” delivered in a melodious manner, sticks in the mind for some time after listening to this tune, famous in nightclubs throughout Ireland. In a French accent, showing the ahead-of-the-curve artistic genius of the songwriter, he imparts great lessons about cycling, such as his intricate knowledge of the steep pitches on the Col d’Aubisque. The line “you’re only gasping for oxygen — I’m gaspin’ for a ...

Eroica Britannia’S New Route 'The Nova' To Allow Modern Bikes

Joseph Delves 22 Feb 2018 Eroica Britannia’s newest addition allows contemporary bikes to get on course at cycling’s favorite retro fest Taking as inspiration the Strade Bianche, or white roads of Tuscany, the Eroica Britannia employs the same mix of unpaved tracks and quiet backways as its Italian forebear. Imparting a British character to proceedings the routes that make up the festival’s main event piggyback on Derbyshire’s industrial heritage, utilising the decommissioned tunnels and cuttings that allowed trains to transport the goods and raw materials that made the area a centre of the manufacturing revolution. A ride with a festival attached, the three-day event has expanded to become one of the UK’s largest. Now heading towards its fifth edition it attracts around 10,000 cycling fans daily. Of these the 4,500 who complete one the three Sunday rides will collectively cover around a quarter of a million miles. In the spirit ...
