Tom Dumoulin forced out of 2019 Giro d'Italia with injury

Photo: Team Sunweb Tom Dumoulin has been forced to abandon the 2019 Giro d'Italia following a crash in the closing kilometres of yesterday's Stage 4. The 28-year-old sustained major bruising and swelling to his left knee after being the highest profile casualty of a large crash during the final 7km of Stage 4 to Frascati on Tuesday. Dumoulin was able to remount his bike and ride to the finish, flanked by his teammates, crossing the line four minutes after stage winner Richard Carapaz (Moivistar), conceding the same amount of time to race leader Primoz Roglic ( Jumbo-Visma ). Crossing the line with a deep cut, which appeared to be caused by a chainring, Dumoulin hobbled from his bike onto the team bus before being taken immediately to a local hospital for further examinations.
