Giro d'Italia 2018: Tom Dumoulin wins Stage 1 time trial taking the pink jersey

Joe Robinson 4 May 2018 The defending champion is the fastest of the day on the tough course around the streets of Jerusalem, Israel Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) wins Stage 1 of the 2018 Giro d'Italia , a 9.7km individual time trial in Jerusalem, Israel, taking the first pink jersey of the race. Rohan Dennis ( BMC Racing ) spent most of the day in the hotseat, however last man to ride Dumoulin managed to better his time by two seconds, with a finishing time of 12.02. Victor Campenaerts ( Lotto-Soudal ) rounded off the day's podium. Team Sky leader Chris Froome's earlier crash seemed to effect his eventual performance after he set a time of 12.39, conceding 37 seconds to defending champion Dumoulin, quite a considerable loss at such an early point within the race.
