Joe Robinson 22 Aug 2019 Giro d'Italia champion forced to miss Spanish Grand Tour after shoulder injury Giro d'Italia champion Richard Carapaz will miss the Vuelta a Espana after crashing at a post-Tour de France criterium. The Ecuadorian was participating in the processional Profronde van Etten-Leur criterium in the Netherlands when he crashed sustaining a 'significant contusion to his right shoulder'. Movistar then confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Carapaz would have to miss the Vuelta, which starts this Saturday , despite receiving treatment and there being a lack of fractures. Carapaz will now be replaced by Jose Joaquin Rojas who was the designated reserve rider. The 34-year-old will join up with the remaining Movistar team before the opening day's team time trial in Torrevieja. While it will be personally disappointing for Carapaz, it may simplify Movistar's approach to the race. See related Vuelta a Espana 2019: Route, stage previews, start ...
